firstly, apologies if i reply in the wrong place because im not used to
using forums like this one. ok, so i checked several floppy disks and theyre
ok and i checked by reformatting disks on a win3.1 system, a win95 system
and a win98 system. i also used the chkdsk command in dos6.2 and they all
tell me that a ms dos formatted 1.44mb floppy disk has 1457664 bytes
available. this is odd i thought.. so i did a google with the three keywords
'1457664 1474560 bytes' and this gave me more than 100 results with
explanations similar to this ~> 512 bytes/sector x 18 sectors/track x 80
tracks/side x 2 sides = 1,474,560 bytes or 2,880 sectors. But your computer
always says it has "1,457,664 bytes total disk space." Well, that's because
you can't use the Boot sector, the two 12-bit FATs (File Allocation Tables;
of 9 sectors each) or the fixed-size Root Directory (of 14 sectors) for
storing data! So you're left with 2,880 - 1 - 18 - 14 = 2,847 sectors or
1,457,664 bytes for your files. <~
so, at last i understand why it tells me 1.38mb and not 1.44 as being the
available capacity of a disk (well i think i do - what throws in more
uncertainty is your file Drive1.img [for example] shows as being 1,474,560
bytes = 1.40mb in properties but shows as 1.44mb in windows explorer file
list.. so properties is not telling me the truth? 1,474,560 bytes by all
other accounts *is* 1.44mb .. so i now understand more about ms dos (sort
of) as i attempt to get into linux but im still no closer to booting the
'floppy BL3' os. :| how much potential space does an unformatted '1.44mb'
floppy have i wonder? and is this relevant to the solution of the problem!?
or, dare i say again, is your file too big? cordiali saluti - peter
