I did cp -a /root/* and /root/.* to /home/user and then chown user * and chown user .* (same for subdirectories) in /home/user.

chmod 666 /dev/null (Opera needs that).

I put startx in /home/user/profile and user is dumped into X (but can exit it).

I still cannot dial as user (it wants /etc/ppp/options, which root does not need) or ssh:

login user:
ssh_askpass: exec(/opt/diet/libexec/ssh_askpass): No such file or directory.

Does user need an /etc/ssh/ssh_config specifying where to look for things?

dial as root
login user (which loads X)
use programs on the icewm menu
exit back to root
hangup
reboot
