chown -R does subdirectories too

chmod 666 /dev/null (Opera needs that).

I still cannot dial as user (it wants /etc/ppp/options, which root does
not need) or ssh:

Why does root not need this options file?

Fixed with the help of the TAG people (The Answer Gang), one of whom typed out his options files which I copied. I got an error message about authorization, changed auth to noauth, and it then complained about permissions on my modem /dev/ttyLT0, which needed to be readable and writable by user

crw-r--rw-- root tty ttyLT0
and also for ttyS* (normal modems)
and ttyp* (for rxvt which otherwise complains about pseudoterminals).

login user:
ssh_askpass: exec(/opt/diet/libexec/ssh_askpass): No such file or
directory.

I asked for a copy of that. Root does not need it. Karolis is going to compile the latest openssh which may work better for user.

I can dial as user and then ssh as root.

psftp works for user
putty probably would if I had a lot of fancy libraries

Does user need an /etc/ssh/ssh_config specifying where to look for things?
