BI found this while going through 3300 old BL list mails. Ron is doing something like this and then generating pdf files from the html. I need something that MS WORD can import (pdf, html, or Wordperfect 5.1 for DOS which does not work in dosemu).

I'd like to see what you guys thought of this idea...

Rather than use Tex or LaTex as the text processor to
compose documents, could a person create a document
with a text editor using html and then view it and
print it with some small web browser from the console
or X?

I'm sure this idea is not new. Has anyone tried it?

Yes, I have used lynx combined with a text editor for this purpose. Go into lynx, type e to get the editor that you have chosen in options (o).
I can view the underlines, bolds, centering, etc. But it prints in plain text (without bold or underline) if you use p to print. Lynx shows all text the same size - it is not exactly WYSIWYG. You can set lynx.lss to show the attributes (as various colors on a VGA monitor, as combinations of bold and underline and blinking on a TTL monitor).

Type \ to 'reveal codes' or hide them again if you just want to see the html in lynx. Links also uses '\' but I have not found a way to use an editor within it - is there one?

Lynx displays underline, italic, and bold in different colors in VGA, or in linux on a TTL monitor underline, bold and italic display however you set lynx.css to do so (the choices being plain text or bold). Acceptable if you use only plain text plus ONE of bold, italic, and underline (In DOS TTL monitors will display underlines properly though not italics, but linux mdacon is buggy). Press e to edit with the editor of your choice (set in options) or e again to view without tags.

Using the default pico of BL2 (nano?) I get wordwrapping at different column numbers depending on the text screen resolution (using framebuffer mode or you can try lynx in X at various resolutions). Would pico -w force 80 (or 100, or 132) columns?

Links nongraphical displays underline as bold and italic as plain, and links graphical displays bold as bold and italic and bold and underline as bold. Could one add italic, bold and underlined fonts to links?

You can only save to plain text with lynx or links. Links displays and saves columns and frames but not very elegantly. (save formatted text).

I have not found any way to toggle between viewing and editing in links or Opera, but opera displays it all properly, and you can choose from various fonts, and mix font sizes (using h1 h2 etc tags), and then print the output. Choose screen resolution or view at 50% or 150% to change font size and number of columns.

Save as a file (.ps) and print as root with gs, or as user with Opera (turn off 'printer headers and footers' to avoid printing the URL?).

How do I get BL3 Opera to work for 'user'?

Two suggestions for page breaks:

Add a lot of <br> (white space). (This assumes you will be printing not sending the file to someone else using a different resolution).

To send files to someone else with page breaks, use CSS Style Sheets (if Opera supports them). I don't understand this.

Or convert to ps and edit, as Ron does.

Does Phoenix/Firefox/Firebird/Mozilla let you toggle editing/viewing?
