The loop version is looking for an IDE drive. There is no
easy way to get it to look for another type. I'm not even
sure if the kernel can handle your type of drive.

The newer kernels have an option (Y to build into kernel or M for a
module) for this type of disk drive. So the BL3 kernel is probably too
old to support this drive.

Is it USB?

I don't think so - it's supposed to be the replacement for the old
ATA/IDE interface. Instead of a wide cable with many wires, it has a
thin cable (with only about 4 or so pins) that plugs between the
motherboard and drive. It supposedly improves airflow for cooling and
is faster than the old IDE interface.
