USB serial is for emulating a serial connection through a USB port. I used it to sync a PDA that someone had written a sync program for. I believe the PDA came in some cases with a cradle that hooked to the serial port even though the PDA itself had a USB port on it (the cradle had some serial-to-USB adaptor integrated). Probably nothing crucial for BL.
