The odd thing is that the two 486 kernels, which both worked on the
486 from hard drive and let me mount the parport zip drive, and on
the pentium boot from grub boot floppy disk directly to parport zip
drive, would not floppy boot on the 486 to parport zip drive.

What was the error? Perhaps:

1) The kernel doesn't support initrds
2) The kernel doesn't like grub (unlikely)
3) The kernel doesn't like the modules
4) Something else?

The pentium or the 486 kernel gets stuck when booting on a 486 to parport zip drive at the line 'POSIX conformance testing by UNIFIX' just before the PCI lines. Both kernels work on a pentium to boot to zip drive. The 486 kernel works on a 486 booting to ext2 (or loop linux).

It is some combination of the 486 (maybe just this 486), the parport zip drive, and the 2.2.x kernel, that gets stuck booting to the zip drive.. If you replace the computer with a pentium, it all works. If you boot to the 486 hard drive, it also works and you can mount the zip drive. Same kernel. I suppose I could try the BL1 kernel but it may not support parport zip drives.

It may be just my 486 laptop with this problem. I will test on a desktop. Maybe James wants to test on his Compaq 486 with parport drive and/or another 486 with BL3 linux on ext2 (or loop).. The kernel is at my website (with pentium kernel) - just write blimmz.gz to fd with dd, mount the fd, cd /boot and replace zimage with the 4dx zimage (rename it zimage). Then copy fs.img (BL3) to the zip drive in /baslin/fs/img, plug in parport zip drive, insert boot floppy, reboot.
