  • Subject: [BL] reduced icewm for BL2
  • Date: Fri, 8 Apr 2005 01:22:57 +0000 (UTC)

I added (from bl2-x.tgz) just the parts of BL2 icewm that I would use and I have therefore left out all the themes except win95, all the icons, 'keys' (I can use other keyboard shortcuts to rxvt such as Ctrl-Esc, Enter), taskbar (which seems to be a bunch of little images of Debian, windows, os2, linux, X, etc. - do we need any of these for BL2?), toolbar (I don't use a mouse). I did keep the help directory, preferences (which are the defaults and really not needed unless you want to know what the defaults are) and menu (from which I may delete the clock and calculator since I would use cli calculator instead and have a clock on the wall).

I added to the menu xv, xpdf, gs, and changed xterm to rxvt on the first line. I think I would need to change it in the control panel menu as well in order to get that submenu (it is it not there at all) and to install clock and calculator and magnify to see the utilities submenu. What does xkill do?

I omitted icewmbg (changes background color if you change workspace, which I don't) and icewmhint (don't know what it does other than act via an option on an arg.) and all the executables other than icewm.

I can read the help files with links, or edit the menu with pico, manually.

I can chroot to bl3 and run X with icewm (from a vt of Bl2) and hopefully use Abiword that way since the BL2 version won't work with Xvesa.

I have BL2 set up with Xvesa in about 1MB of files for X, not the regular 10MB.

What I had left out previously was 'menu' (a small file which I will make smaller), which creates the menu (Ctrl-Esc), and the win95 theme - 4 little icons for restore, maximize, minimize, close (ascii art-like), and one slightly larger .theme file which defines colors of taskbars etc.

I now have under /lib/X11/icewm only 128K of files, most of which are help files (76K) and preference (a 14K list of default settings), instead of 804K originally in /lib/X11/icewm.

I compared this with the icewm in BL3 and it is not much smaller despite doing less.

A du on icewm in BL3 shows 155K of files (even including the tiny Debian and Windows and OS2 .xpm files). A lot of work was done to pare this down. The 265K metal2 theme was omitted. The irrelevant icons (for gnome and kde and gimp and java) were removed and some others apparently renamed to be shorter, the toolbar was changed to be more useful (ppp-on and ppp-off), the .html help files were remade into a icewm.faq.gz.

Winoptions is stil there and has something to do with java, xload, and mozilla and xeyes. Is it relevant to BL3? What is fte?
