Same kernel in floppy version and DOS version. So kernel
is not the issue.

The floppy uses lilo to boot, the DOS version uses loadlin.exe
so that could be the issue. loadlin.exe doesn't like some of
the himem.sys and emm386.exe parameters. Try booting DOS
without them (eg without config.sys).

If by "clean dos" you mean no config.sys and no autoexec.bat
then loadlin.exe is probably not the problem. That leaves
the filesystem. The DOS version has a loop filesystem (fs.img).
It must be located on the C: drive and it must be located in
a directory called BASLIN. The BASLIN directory must not be
a subdirectory of another. These are not suggestions. The
loopfile will not boot unless it is sitting in C:\BASLIN

You can install to hard drive from the floppy version.
For this you need unallocated space for a Linux partition.

No. It works with the floppy version.

No. A DOS problem will probably show up as a loadlin error.
Are you getting a loadlin error message on the screen?

Are you able to create a DOS6 boot disk? If so, try booting
the system from that, go to C:\BASLIN and execute boot.

Cheers,
Steven
