Sure. I've had four or five 386dx40s with VESA slots.
In fact I can't remember having a 386dx40 without VLB.
But it was a different story with 386dx33s and 386dx25s.

There's a big difference between a 386 DX and SX
(which is not fixed by adding a copro). It may well
be true that a 386SX-33 is too slow to be an Xterminal,
but a 386DX-40 works just fine.
