If you are getting some response from gpm then it probably
installed OK. Your problem sounds like a hardware issue.
What is your exact command for starting gpm?

You might want to try some other options (eg -a -d -r).
See 'man gpm'

Xvesa has built-in routines for identifying mice. With
gpm you have to identify the mouse yourself and tell gpm.
I don't suppose you know whether that particular mouse
runs OK under gpm in BL1? That might tell us something.

No, the BL3 kernel has built-in support for ps2 mice.
