I posted at the linux-parport list and got back the answer from the author
of the parport_pc driver, who is working on a fix. Something to do with
my card being probed for modes other than SPP and it does not support
them.

insmod parport_pc io=0x378 fixed my problem. I can use mdacon and print
at the same time again.

You can also specify irq when installing parport_pc. I wonder if that
would work instead of the echo 7 > /proc/parport/0/irq ?

My theory would be that it is the probing for possible parallel ports that is
causing the problem, I assume the hercules cards are old ISA cards and hence
may well have a register that is at a location typically used by one of the 3
standard parallel ports. My first suggestion is therefore to specify when
insmod'ing parport_pc the io address to use which should prevent other
addresses from being probed. It is also worth seeing if the problem follows
the card if you move it between machines.
