I installed BasicLinux 3.02 (BL3) on a Toshiba Libretto C50, Pentium 70, 32 MB of RAM. I have loaded BL3 and it works fine in character mode. But when I go "startx" the screen goes black and there is no mouse pointer.

Xvesa is working for us with Win98 DOS including himem.sys. Can we use
the Win98 DOS himem.sys to replace that in DOS 6.22, whic gives a black screen?

I'm using Windows 98SE, and I don't even know if there is a Config.sys or Autoecxec bat. I thought it was probably related to the video chip set, not being compatible with Xvesa. If its a DOS configuration problem then I'm better off than I thought.

Sounds like the usual Xvesa conflict (some DOS devices/TSRs do something that confuses Xvesa). I suggest you boot DOS without config.sys, without autoexec.bat, and without windows. If that works, you can use trial-and-error to figure out exactly which device/TSR is causing the conflict. For me it was HIMEM.SYS (from DOS 6.22). When I replaced it with the HIMEM.SYS from DOS 5, the clash disappeared. There is also a known clash with some implementations of SMARTDRV.

I don't think I've got any config.sys or autoexec. I'll check. I don't think I'm using hymen.sys, should I be? That is is it necessary?
I am out of town for the next couple of days so it will be Monday at the earliest, before I can check maybe later, but I'll be checking my email so I can follow the list..

I'm hoping that someday we will discover a simple fix for the Xvesa clash -- like a loadlin parameter that completely wipes
the detritus left by DOS.

When I get it figured out I post the results, it may help figure it out.

Cheers,
Steven
