Sounds like the usual Xvesa conflict (some DOS devices/TSRs do
something that confuses Xvesa). I suggest you boot DOS without
config.sys, without autoexec.bat, and without windows. If that
works, you can use trial-and-error to figure out exactly which
device/TSR is causing the conflict. For me it was HIMEM.SYS
(from DOS 6.22). When I replaced it with the HIMEM.SYS from
DOS 5, the clash disappeared. There is also a known clash with
some implementations of SMARTDRV.
I'm hoping that someday we will discover a simple fix for the
Xvesa clash -- like a loadlin parameter that completely wipes
the detritus left by DOS.
Cheers,
Steven
