That could indeed be the cause. Particularly if the timeout
errors occur frequently. It would be best to eliminate the
timeout errors (if possible). There are several parameters
for ifconfig (eg mtu) which might fix the problem.

You could use cmp after the transfer to check that the
local file is identical to the file on the nfs server.
