I think Sindi's recent posts to the list concerning xmodmap could be
relevant to this. She seems to have determined that pointing xinitrc to
that file resolves the (somewhat similar) keyboard issues she was having.
Take a look at her posts on that topic, or maybe search the archive for
xmodmap.
