Kevin asked "Is the word pointed with AH or OH pointing in the other
systems?"
Good question and I'd like to add the possibility of UH (like a Kubutz or
Shuruk).
We know (per e.g. Chomsky's translation of Mikhlol) that Kodashim (which has
a Kamatz Katan as the vowel of K) was voweled by the Babylonian Jews who
vocalized the Tanah with a vowel that's the equivalent of a Kubutz - so they
apparently pronounced it as Kudashim.
Does someone know what vowel was used in the Babylonian or Land-of-Israel
("Palestinian") vocalization systems as the first vowel in the name of
Ruth's mother-in-law - was it an AH, OH, or UH?
And, does anyone know if this name exists in another Semitic language
(Arabic, Aramaic, other?) - and if so, what's the first vowel-sound?
Thanks,
Rivka Sherman-Gold, Ph.D.
