These are exactly the kind of comments I have come to expect from you Jim.

Anyway, you still haven't answered my question:
Do you think that a group of unlettered fishermen from Gallilee would, by
your standards,
be included in such scholarly lists? Or would be awarded their Ph.D's?

Perhaps its difficult to take you seriously as a scholar when your
spelling belies any attention to detail. Sure, everyone makes typos,
but to consistently misspell simple words, and names of people with whom
you purportedly studied- well, it doesn't paint a very scholarly
picture. I'm not picking on you. I'm just pointing out that St Andrews
has pretty high standards and, frankly, its almost impossible for me to
believe what you are saying. The anonymity of the internet makes me
extremely skeptical. So, when I see a name I don't recognize, I look on
the SBL membership list to see if they are affiliated with the largest
and most well known scoeity of biblical scholars. If said person is not
listed I am, I confess, not inclined to take too seriously what they say
in terms of biblical exegesis or translation.

That's not to say that non members of SBL have nothing to say. Indeed
not! But again, with the anonymity granted many online and my naturally
suspicious nature, that's how it works for me.

And may I ask? Just why do you feel it necessary to sign your posts with the
letters ThD after
your name? Do you feel that that gives you some kind of authority? Or higher
understanding? How
many languages can you speak? Fluently? With a good power over idoms? Without
having to translate
in your head first?

I appreciate it, as an outsider, when scholars provide their credentials.
On some lists (including others where Dr. Jim West posts) it is a
requirement to post your full name and affiliation and credentials where
applicable. There is no reason to require of him to have one signature
for those lists and a special "credentials-free" signature here. It also
helps me refer to them properly in certain posts. While I don't always
refer by titles, I do so especially when I criticize opinions, to make it
clear that even though I'm criticizing them, they have credentials and I
don't (I usually also include a sentence to that effect in the body of the
criticism). In many cases these credentials also make it possible for
me to look up their c.v. and understand where they are coming from
and evaluate their areas of expertise.
