*Two different dictionaries of linguistics: R.L. Trask 1993 and D. Crystal
1997 define exophora differently. Crystal defines it as pointing outside the
text, extra-linguistic. Trask defines it as pointing outside the sentence.
According to Trask the referent can be found either in the linguistic
context or in the extra-linguistic context.
Ezek. 23:28 ky kh )mr )dny yhwh hnny ntnK byd )$r &n)t byd )$r-nq(h np$K mhM
The antecedent of )$r in the expression byd )$r &n)t is exophoric according
to Trask's definition. The referents of )$r have been recently activated and
are highly accessible: Ezek. 23:22-23 "the Babylonians and all the
Chaldeans, Pekod and Shoa and Koa, and all the Assyrians ... "
But this analysis takes us outside of syntax as an autonomous system.
Inserting a place holder % in the clause byd-% )$r &n)t to mark the position
of the antecedent obscures the fact the referent of )$r is accessible
somewhere else (i.e., exophoric Trask:1993 page 97).
