Sorry to hear this. But I don't think this was the cause of the problem. I
would expect that setup to have some problems displaying and printing the
web page - but certainly not that the whole system would get messed up. I
suspect the problem was something unrelated which took place at the same
time by coincidence.
I'm sorry to disagree with Bruce Gardner; I really don't know of anything
which 98 can do but XP, once properly set up, cannot do - except easily
crash! But I think you will find Windows XP, once everything has been
installed properly, and after you have got used to it which may take a few
weeks, a much more stable and pleasant working environment than 98. It will
be especially advantageous to you for working in Hebrew as it comes with
good built-in Hebrew support - which you can make even better by installing
a (free) package like the SIL Hebrew Unicode Fonts (with supporting keyboard
drivers etc) from http://www.sil.org/computing/fonts/silhebruni/. There
might still be a few glitches with older material using an incompatible
system, but XP, as a generally much more stable system than 98, is very
unlikely to be crashed by them.
