I think it belongs in the linux spell regardless. It's a very sensible
option for people to want to execute when casting linux, and they shouldn't
need to know about external scripts to get it. One think that really
impressed me when coming to sourcemage was how much better our
distro-provided kernel build process was than the others and how it doesn't
require a bunch of external-to-the-regular-packaging-system black magic.
