I think we are all grasping at different ideas and talking at cross purposes.

in the new world order, /var/cache/sorcery will be filled with lots of cache
tarballs and they will be used to install the new system.
image.tar.bz2 is dead and buried.

Sometime in the future, a fully laden 450-500MB ISO could compile and install
a native system using CROSS_INSTALL. If this was done, no caches would be
necessary, but could be included for ultimate safety if wanted. This
excercise is left up to some other developer, but the foundations are being
laid currently.
