Jim,

Heron's idea is a good one. Occasionally seed companies will sell an open
pollinated line as a hybrid to keep competitors away from selling the
(easily reproduced) seed. If you're very lucky it won't be a chore at all.
Otherwise, just plant and select from the F2 generation. You can either
just keep on selecting from the plants that best fit your needs, or you can
make crosses among those F2s (F3's, etc.that are closest to what you want.
That'd probably give you a better chance at hitting your target. There's a
book by Carol Deppe called Breed Your Own Vegetable Varieties that I found
very useful.
