Good comments on behavior. Thanks. My mare is more aggressive than defensive
when she decides to warn off an annoying horse. Yes, I can correct her IF I
am paying attention to her so I can prevent it. One thing I do NOT want to do
is eliminate the warning signals with training so the kick comes
"unannounced". But this is possibly what I am teaching by correcting her for
laying back her ears and warning off the tailgater.

What I would specifically appreciate are training techniques such as hinted
by Una on how to "desensitize" or decrease the personal space for my mare. I
would like to feel confident that she knows she is supposed to put up with
annoying colts or stupid horses or scared horses that may crowd her while my
attention is diverted. (I have been unsucessful in finding info about polo
pony training, so far.)
