My position is subjective, as is everyone's.  If Raleigh makes a subset of humanity happy, more power to them.  Personally, I can't look at the local culture anymore without reflexively comparing them to others I've known.  I'm from Richmond VA - I can rattle off comparisons between the items you've listed below and much better examples there without really trying.  I honestly believe this town spends the gross majority of it's resources on residential and commercial development.  Infrastructure and culture aren't on the map.  It's like Raleigh believes they'll get a seat at the "big city" table with people alone.

That's because you used to live in East BF, Greg. :)

Raleigh's got plenty: the N.C. Symphony, N.C. Museum of Art (granted,
both state entities). a strong parks department, a greenway system
second to none, a lively downtown, relatively low crime, and great
schools. What's not to like?
