Hi Tanner

It appeared to me, since you were responding to a specific call
to make sure your North Carolina registration was current, that you were
specifically talking about election fraud in North Carolina.
oh, not my intention but I see what you mean - No, just a general comment since federal election 'issues' in any state can potentially have a direct impact in the other states.
I keep forgetting that IIRC the presidential election is not a direct vote, but a state level vote to suggest how the state, in the form of the electoral college electors, should vote.

as an election judge in the state of NC (specifically Durham county for me),
Another of your many talents I wasn't aware of :)

So, as you can hopefully see, local election officials work very hard to make
sure elections are done so that everyone's vote counts.
I'm sure they do - it wasn't my intention to suggest otherwise

> I have not seen the HBO special
I found it interesting from the technical perspective as well as seeing what issues might arise even if the specifics don't apply in NC

If you're really paranoid,
I call it "healthy concern" :)

Hi Tanner,

Would you care to expound on your statement, please?
Sure - it's referring to the disturbing issues referenced in my earlier post

Hi All,
I finally got around to watching this documentary that was aired on HBO
in May:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacking_Democracy
http://www.hbo.com/docs/programs/hackingdemocracy/
I'd thought there would have been be a big fuss? Did I miss something?

I'm not sure I like your insinuation
Neither do I , however when I made the above post I hoped for some sort of
rational explanation......

Hi Simon,

My bad, I did not realize you were talking about what you had referenced
before. It appeared to me, since you were responding to a specific call
to make sure your North Carolina registration was current, that you were
specifically talking about election fraud in North Carolina. And, as
an election
judge in the state of NC (specifically Durham county for me), one of my
jobs is to make sure as much as I can that such fraud does not take place
on the day of the election.

I have not seen the HBO special and so cannot comment on it. I can, however,
mention that at least in Durham county such wholesale fraud would be difficult.
We use optically scanned ballots which provide a concrete record of the voter's
intention. Also, to guard against hacks on the vote counting machines
themselves
a random hand recount of randomly chosen districts is performed several days
after the election.

So, as you can hopefully see, local election officials work very hard to make
sure elections are done so that everyone's vote counts. If you're
really paranoid,
though, I'd strongly suggest that you volunteer as an election
official with your
local board of elections. They're expecting record turnouts for the
election this
November and will need as many people as they can get. Training for Durham
county will begin in October and election officials do get paid. If
anyone would
like more information about that, I'd be happy to answer questions but your best
bet is to find your local board of elections web page which will give
you all the
information you need.

Cheers,
Tanner Lovelace
