Tanner says blogging is different from journaling because of the focus
of the individual writer (extro vs. intro) - so why would that cause
people to treat LJ-based writers who write on serious issues with an
outward focus in the same way as their lovelorn high-schooler
counterparts, simply because they use the same blog host? What kind of
loopy (il)logic is that?

Location matters. There's just something different about a restaurant on a boat, or a church in a strip mall. Nothing to do (necessarily) with the food or fellowship inside, but it's a different first impression. If that doesn't bother you, go for it!

For what it's worth, LJ does seem to have a distinctive culture. Lots of (decorated) links to friends' LJ pages, funky nicknames, and a fondness for navel-gazing fun like "What flavor of ice cream would you be?" I imagine you could avoid all that stuff, but I wonder if the JL authoring tool somehow encourages it?
