I downloaded ar for Slackware and tried to run it:
error while loading shared libraries: libbfd-2.9.1.0.25.so

I have downloaded MANIFEST.gz and installed less.

I tried to use zless but am told I don't have it.

I did not have Steven's instruction for using grep instead
since I had not downloaded them.

So I used ar at my friend's freeBSD server (about 50K). He has installed
the complete freeBSD 4 (several G, I think) so no dependency problems.

ar -x photopc.deb

It produceed a very small file debian-binary.
And a control.tar.gz.
And a data.tar.gz.

tar xvfz data.tar.gz produced a lot of useful files including
photopc and man and doc files.

So I kermitted data.tar.gz to my computer.

installpkg data.tar.gz (which probably means I also have to uninstall
data.tar.gz and I should have renamed the file to photopc.tar.gz first)

I typed photopc and got a message that I don't have a /dev/photopc.

Now what? I do have to plug the camera cable into a serial port.
How do I make a /dev/photopc so I can plug into Com1?

I got as far as:

mknod /dev/photopc type major minor

Type should be b for block or c for character. ??
major and minor are numbers - do I copy them from some similar device?

It says to use MAKEDEV shell script to find out the number but I doubt
that BL2 comes with that.

The latest pdftotext from Doug Kaufman (static) does not seem to have any
dependencies. I need a pdf file to test it on. It is about 900K.
Stripped but not gzexed (whcih would make it smaller but slower).

What do the numbers on top of the columns in top mean?

I loaded varous things and looked at RSS.

links219 svga graphical is 2080

links219 X is 544 but then you have to add to that

2434 xvga15 (or 2172 xmono)
1892 xterm
768 xinit
1212 icewm (or 708 ratpoison)

The total is then 6848, three times that for the console version.
So it might work better in console version on low memory machines,
but Howard reported that it needed a math coprocessor anyway, if I
understood correctly.
