Didn't work. I now have a failed Debian install and a failed Source Mage
install on the same disk.

Why/how are neither of them working?

I did, however, apparently get grub to install successfully on /boot
(which is hda1). I also temporarily moved the /boot files to /home/boot
so that Debian wouldn't overwrite them, and the grub on MBR no longer
shows a speckled font. Can I still get it to boot Source Mage?

All you need to do is tell GRUB where the SMGL kernel and root
partitions are and it'll boot into it. Same with Debian.
