it, but looking at /proc/[grub]/fd I don't see it with any device files
open except /dev/vc/1. Both copies of this ISO get stuck in the same
place. How do I get past this?

How old is this machine? Have you tried booting the ISO with 'noacpi'
or 'acpi=off'?
