Odds are very high that glibc was the culprit. I spent a substantial
amount of time trying to figure this one out. Basically what happens
is the make install has to replace ld-2.3.1.so (and its symlink
ld-linux.so.2). The instant you blow away that file you lose the ability
to dynamically load progams. I've tried a number of things, some say
that you just have ldconfig running constantly somewhere else, and that
might fix it. I originally thought having a seperate /tmp/lib directory
would have done it, however I cant seem to make anything honor the ld.so
thats there. The only other solution Ive been able to come up with is
installing to a seperate directory then manually copying things over
in some safe maner. On that note, if you try to replace ld-2.3.1.so by
hand you tend to get a seg fault. Perhaps if someone dug around in the
ld and ld.so manuals we could find something that i missed.
