You're no doubt right. I used MySQL as an example because I'm not
familiar with db or any non-SQL databases. Not sure what the
db-equivalent of a select would be..

$DEBUG isn't passed between scripts, it's set by the user and used by
the scripts. You could use this variable just as easily from perl with
$ENV{DEBUG}. You can't use the environment to pass data between scripts
unless you're passing data are children, in which case it's just as easy
to do in any language.

That's where you're wrong. Perl *is* the greatest tool for every task.
I wrote a perl script that cleans my garage. Yes, I'm still joking..
