Simplicity? Have you looked at the sorcery functions, at the many
awkward for/cut/grep loops that would be one-line perl functions?

As for a smaller base system, since it requires a gig of free hard drive
space to compile many spells, what's another 50 megs in required
binaries? I would guess that perl and mysql are already on 95% of the
source mage installations already anyway..
