The problem is that this will cost *more* development time in the
future, since the whole thing gets more complicated.
If I currently want to modify a spell with patch I need to care only
about the files in one place (SCRIPT_DIRECTORY). It does not matter
whether the source file was already downloaded or not since we never
modify the source tarballs. No matter how often I have to fix syntax
errors in grimoire scripts or patches, there is only one place.
If the patches are separated things get worse:
I have to take care of
1. the files in my grimoire
2. the patches somewhere else
3. the downloaded patches in /var/spool/sorcery.
Whenever I modify a patch, I have to do one of
a.
1. remove the old patch to make sure that the new one is downloaded
2. somehow notify the system that the new patch has to be used
(cvs commit (breaks the grimoire) and wait for update (horrible);
or use something like --patch-url in cast or summon and point
it to my private ftp server for grimoire maintenance)
b.
edit patches in /var/spool/sorcery and don't forget to copy back
the latest version.
c.
copy patches manually to /var/spool/sorcery and don't forget this
step after the second correction.
d.
hack something into sorcery which makes all this a little less
error prone.
After the successful testing I have to make sure that I don't forget
to commit the changes in both repos at the same time or the grimoire
gets broken.
Probably you will find less complicated ways to do the things outlined
above but the whole workflow with files in different locations in
different repos is flawed.
People tend to do mistakes so we should keep things simple, especially
if the benefit is not that great. SMGL suffers from a lack of
maintainer / developer time, not from hordes of users which complain
about slow grimoire download times.
