Most patches change only a few lines in a makefile or config file, or
are rather small security fixes. It makes maintenance much easier if
such patches are kept in the spell directory (no searching for
patches; you don't have to always make sure that the latest version is
in /var/spool/sorcery; no versioning; etc.).

This sounds like an extreme exception. IMO it would be sufficient to
move patches for spells like this to an external location.
