From all the posts I saw on sun's site their jdk (and jre) was not working with gcc 3.x and up. there was a workaround by copying old files or something but that's not a good solution. pretty much a recompile of their jdk would fix it but they haven't done that yet. That is my understanding of the issue.

As far as I understand, in principle there shouldn't be any problem to
run java that is compiled with older gcc, the same way we are still
compiling some of the spells with gcc2, and running them, and the same
way we are able to run jdk1.3.1 which is also compiled with gcc2.95. I
was able to run jdk 1.4.0 with gcc3.1 at the time, and then was able to
compile jdk1.4.0 with gcc 3.1 to get the plugins to work (you need a
working version of jdk1.4.0 in order to compile jdk1.4.0...) but
something got screwed up in the transition to gcc3.2. I struggled with
it for a while and gave up, but I find it hard to believe that if it
worked in a system fully compiled with gcc3.1, it cannot work in a
system compiled with gcc3.2.

This is because they compile java with gcc 2.95.3. It does not work with gcc 3.x. If you register with the java site you can search for the bug and then vote for it to be fixed. Sun is aware of the problem, but no one is sure when they are going to fix it. You can download the source for the jdk and try to compile it but i did not have any luck with that. In the mean time you can use blackdown's version, you won't get 1.4.1, but 1.3.1 is pretty good. The plugins will not work but you'll have java support.

Problem I am having is that none of the java executables work.
