They are not hardcoded. the / is relative to the initrd root.
Unless you want to create those directories anywhere in a subdir of the
initrd, this is as relative as they're ever gonna get.

Maybe hardcoded is not the correct term. For instance, over time, grep has changed its location from /bin to /usr/bin. So, to avoid having to change the config file, my suggestion here was to use the which command to find the correct location of the executable.
