Hola Christopher,

you certainly appear like a great info and genetic ressource source to me!
(in regards to the project I described in my other post). So brace yourself
for me flooding you with questions and seed requests?

Abrazos!

I am still keeping up with this list.

And I am aboout to break -for me personally- new ground permaculturally.

I arrived in Peru a few days ago, with the intention to move into a
particular area in the cloudforest andean foothills on the East side of the
Andes. Several things are attractive as well as challenging there:

a) the climate - it is truly tropical with -due to elevation mas o menos 800m
above sea level- relatively cool nights and frequent temperature swings.

b) the setting - there is secondary growth forest for sale, with plenty of
slopes and water and high dynamic fertility. It is as far in the sticks as
you can get in Peru - hardware stores or nurseries are VERY few and nothing
in between, many of the plots do not even have access roads - it is basically
bush. And I am well aware of the PC priciple "stay out of the bush - it is
already in good order". At the same time this is exactly part of my
motivation to go there, because

c) I know of at least 3 different groups of people who either already have or
want to buy lands there (the one group that already has has 280ha) - AND as
far as I have been gathering from afar even though they cherish the priciples
of PC, they seem to have ideas about agriculture and food, that is not truly
forest compatible. This brings me to

d) I want first for myself -as I want to live a life really close to nature-
and a few similarly crazy friends to develop a style of village, agriculture
und subsistence that is as truly forest compatible as the life of small
indigenous tribes in the cloudforest has been for millenia. And second I want
to nudge as well as practically support those mentioned communities to do
likewise - e.g. to adjust their lifestyle to the landscape rather than
adjusting the landscape to their (alien) lifestyle.

e) what I can forsee by now, is that apart from a forest plot as big as
possible (I would not mind it to be several square kilometers, as everything
apart from the corner I intend to carve out a forest compatible life in will
be a provate rexerve anyways), and the plots of the other communities, it
will be a transitional necessity to buy one of the existing and more or less
degraded farms, that do exist alongside the few roads that lead through the
bush. On this farm we (all of the groups intending to start a really new life
as in "new civilization" there) can grow our food until 1) the food trees,
shrubs, vines and other perennials that will be planted interspersed the
existing forest in close proximity of the village(s) are sufficiently matured
to provide -together with a few square meters of annual gardens right next to
the huts- all the needed sustenance, and 2) we are adjusted in our food and
lifestyle habits to this. Also we can have the nursery that is going to
produce all the
se food trees, shrubs, vines and other perennials as well as a shared
workshop, maybe guest rooms etc.

All and any ideas, hints, ressources etc. welcome!

A REQUEST: I used to posess a spanish-english, english-spanish field guide
for all things permaculturally and botanical, I believe it was by a man named
Duke. Can anyone point me to the website I can order it from? I had it for
years and never used it, and just months before this lifechanging project
arose I gave it away.

Lawrence, I honor you for your optimism. I would be surprised if it will EVER
go away, just like the terrorists are still with us on every flight since
9/11, I am afraid the authorities in power are too fond of the way fearful
people can be governed, to let this thing recede. And I hope I am wrong!

Hugs!
Georg

By the way, have a look at the books offered by Chelsea Green. Very many

I hope all of you have survived the pandemic and will continue to be

Wonderful. I have a little story to tell you about an experience I had on
my land not long after I bought it. I will save that for the next reply as
I have to resolve replacement of a non working computer I bought recently
with the vendor; can't put that off any longer. This will give me time to
think through my little essay about how to not disturb living systems on
land you move onto and why it is so important. You will enjoy it and be
able to apply my experience to yours as your presence on your land unfolds.

*Finalist for 2009 The Council on Botanical & Horticultural Libraries
Literature Award!*

*A Comprehensive Guide Addressing Safety, Efficacy, and Suitability *

About a quarter of all the medicines we use come from rainforest plants and
more than 1,400 varieties of tropical plants are being investigated as
potential cures for cancer. Curare comes from a tropical vine and quinine
from the cinchona tree. A comprehensive guide to safety, efficacy, and
suitability, *Duke?s Handbook of Medicinal Plants of Latin America*
responds to continuing interest in medicinal plants and the potential
remedies they contain.

*Determine Which Species Can Be Used for Specific Targets *

The author of *Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook and CRC Handbook of Medicinal
Herbs*, James A. Duke covers roughly 500 of the more important Native Latin
American medicinal plants in a highly organized format. After a brief
introduction, each entry contains scientific and colloquial names,
synonyms, reference to illustrations, notes, biological activities,
medicinal indications, dosages, potential hazards, extracts, and
references. This format supplies a starting point for determining which
species can be used for specific targets.

*Better Data Helps You Focus Your Search *

Year-round moderate temperatures, abundant rainfall, and rich soils make
tropical Latin America home to nearly 100,000 of the world?s 300,000 known
species of plants, and therefore home to untold numbers of potential cures.
Focusing on 500 of the most well-known and well-studied plants, this book
helps you focus your search for ammunition against constantly evolving
pathogens and newly emerging diseases.

Wonderful, Michael! That is real encouragement that the movement is still
very much alive and continuing to move forward.

I am a believer of another order in Permaculture. Mollison's statement that
the only limit to a permaculture design is the imagination of the designer
really turned me on. He was way ahead of his time.

Most of you in this list that I heard from over the years are actively
involved in the Permaculture movement as PDC instructors, consultants,
authors, gathering/convocation organizers and of course practitioners. My
activities were mostly related to communications resources and archive
building. I have done extensive work on my 6 acre farm property and will
post some photos of it from time to time. I did a lot of earthworks
building, ponds,
terraces, field leveling, big berm building and more.

Have you heard from Scott Pittman? He told me that he still reads this list
so Scott, if you are reading this post, let us hear from you!

Every tree seed that drops on the ground on my land sprouts and rapidly
grows to seedling stage and onto 4" caliper trees in no time:
ash
sycamore
cedar
pine
eleagnus
some mystery trees
sweetgum
I cut down several ashs that were full of seeds, thousands, most of them
germinated and I had an instant woodlot

I pay attention when any arrive.

My concerns are enclosed agriculture in deserts (tunnels), increasing the
permaculture crops near me (such as pinyon, cactus and wolfberries), and
breeding for drought and salt tolerant plants in pinus, euphorbia, prunus,
and ribes.

I'm still here and have missed the postings on this list. Glad to see some
movement! It takes a lot of time and energy to keep up with something like
this, so your work is much appreciated, Lawrence.

My own efforts in permaculture are almost wholly focused on keeping the
magazine going. Permaculture Design is a key networking tool for North
American permaculture. You can always find upcoming PDCs and workshops listed
in our print magazine (yes, the Events and Calendar listings are a free
service to the community) and online (also free). Four times a year, we
strive to present a useful compendium of articles, many of which are focused
on a particular theme. May's theme was Mutual Aid. November's issue will be
built around forestry. Anyone with a project in woodlands management,
sustainable forestry, wildcrafting, agroforestry, or anything else
forestry-related (very timely and has been for the past 500 years if not
longer), consider writing an article for the issue. And for future issues.
We're reader-supported... there is no paid content from professional writers,
and our pages aren't filling up with advertising.

Incidentally, we finally completed the first generation digital archive of
all back issues up through #118. This goes all the way back to the beginning
of the Activist in the heady days of early permaculture in North America.
Inspiring to read if you have the time. These are available for free download
to all subscribers.
