G'day,

We have a lot of licorice growing wild in and around our town (Bendigo,
Victoria), thanks to the Chinese miners/market gardeners back in the
1850's-1880's and the roots are fantastic for tea or to chew on, but in
small doses as they are so strongly flavoured. I remember well when Bill
Mollison stayed with us years ago and knowing his penchant for the
lolly/candy version of Licorice we took him down the Bendigo Creek flats
where we dug up a bit to keep him going. Its a very tough perennial that
stands the test of time that's for sure, at least in our part of the world.

We are avid users of Chinese Medicine as well and I've noticed many of
their preparations have a Glycyrrhiza spp. component in them which is
interesting. The other information that Lawrence has provided is very
interesting and the same duty of care should be applied to any herbal
remedy.

All the best,

Darren
