You may want to check with other depts on water issues. There may be budgets
available for water catchment. Also consider saving irrigation costs over
many years as well as maintanence costs. A good design may well br less
expensive the more sustainable elements are there, right?

Hi again,

Thanks for all of your great ideas. Animals would be excellent, but I think
maintenance would become overwhelming pretty quickly. It was my impression
that the city was looking for something that would paint Portland as
sustainable and could be easily explained with a couple signs. I realize
that is kinda boring, but it is hard to sell anything complicated to city
officials. Food systems would be great - but do you think all the pollution
would be a problem? What about coppicing willow for weaving (maybe even
biofuel?)? I also get the impression that this project will need to cost
around the same amount as the typical ivy/st.johnswort mass plantings cost,
which unfortunately rules out any earth moving plans.

Thanks again for all the help! It is much appreciated.

Chris
