i know bill talks a little about coconuts in the designers manual,
might be worth rechecking.

here in bali they certainly use them well; reinforcing terrace/bund
walls, preventing erosion by the sea, young coconuts make a delicious
drink, oil (for cooking, biofuel, etc) dried husks used as a fuel
(seems the only thing worth cooking satay sticks over) structural
timber, providers of shade, etc etc.

their root systems might preclude them from being planted too close to
other deep rooted perennials, but i haven't seen them interfering with
annuals.
