Sir David has been a strong supporter of GM crops advising the
government to allow such crops. His advisers have been selected from
Monsanto and Syngenta and academics supported by them. He does not seem
to regard organic agriculture to be part of science. However, his code
would be worthwhile provided that it was imposed, not ignored as it has
been in promoting GM crops.
SCIENTIFIC CODE OF ETHICS
In a bid to boost public trust, Sir David King, Britain's chief
scientific adviser, has drafted the equivalent of the Hippocratic Oath
for scientists. So far, the code has been backed by the British
government and the 44,000 members of the Royal Society of Chemistry. It
calls on professionals to:
Act with skill and care, keep skills up to date.
Prevent corrupt practice and declare conflicts of interest.
Respect and acknowledge the work of other scientists.
Ensure that research is justified and lawful.
Minimize impacts on people, animals and the environment.
Discuss issues science raises for society.
Do not mislead; present evidence honestly.
