This is a unique opportunity for professional development with one of
permacultures leading designers and educators at Djanbung Permaculture
Gardens, Nthn NSW.
The advanced specialist courses assume the prior knowledge of the PDC. All
courses lead to accredited AQF competencies - conditions apply.

Design Skills Workshop
This 3-day intensive workshop is for PDC graduates interested in developing
skills and an effective toolbox for professional consulting and design work.
The course covers advance map reading, preparing base plans, design process
and client communications, drafting and drawing skills and techniques,
design documentation, bills of quantity, costs and quotes. This workshop
also includes the Flexible Learning Orientation Workshop (FLOW) and
functions as a bridging course between the PDC and APT Cert IV in
Permaculture core units.

Working with Cultural Diversity
Sustainable Aid & Development Facilitation
Aug 13-24, 2007

This 2-part course provides essential skills training for people working or
intending to work with culturally diverse communities, indigenous groups and
overseas development programs. This is an important and growing are of
permaculture work requiring a solid theoretic and practical background to
effectively facilitate sustainable change in areas of need. Graduates from
these courses are undertaking significant work in diverse projects all over
the world.
Prior completion of a PDC is prerequisite for these courses

Part 1
Working with Cultural Diversity
Aug 13-16, 2007 Cost:$355/$305
This course focuses on skills required for working with human and cultural
diversity including diverse ethnic communities, indigenous peoples and
disadvantaged groups. The course covers protocols, appropriate
communications, community development issues, social, cultural and historic
considerations, and basic principles of community facilitation and conflict
resolution.
This course is prerequisite knowledge for Part 2 Sustainable Aid and
Community Development, and addresses the requirements for the APT Cert IV
unit RTD4802A Develop approaches to include cultural and human diversity.

Part 2
Sustainable Aid & Development Facilitation
Aug 20-24, 2007 Cost $475/$415
This course is for people intending to work on overseas projects, especially
in third world situations. It further builds on knowledge and skills from
Part 1 . Topics include health, nutrition and food security, appropriate aid
and technology, community consultation and participatory planning
facilitation, community directed development, project management,
sustainable strategies for humid and arid tropics, and personal security.
This course addresses requirements for the Diploma of Permaculture unit
PIL508A Plan management strategies for overseas development projects. Course
involves discussion, interactive learning, role play, presentations and case
studies

Sustainable Settlements & Ecovillage Design
Sept 3-14, 2007 Cost: $890/$750

This course is for people involved or interested in planning, designing &
creating sustainable human settlements: ecovillages, intentional
communities, co-housing, ecological developments and revitalising existing
rural and urban communities.
Creative solutions for sustainable community development through holistic
planning and community cooperation based on permaculture and the principles
of ecological and social sustainability. This course is will empower you
with tools and skills to translate dreams into reality, identify pathways
and develop strategies in partnership with people and nature to create
vibrant communities in harmony with the earth.
Course topics include:
- Local to Global Perspectives on ESD, Footprints, responding to climate
change, peak oil and globalisation
- Bioregional and social catchment planning, land ownership and settlement
patterns
- Working with planning laws and legal frameworks
- Land tenure options, residents agreements, community management,
governance & by-laws
- Social, legal, economic and ecological parameters in design
- Working with spirit of place and fostering sense of place
- Design for the full human life-cycle & diverse lifestyle needs
- Realistic approach to diverse settlement types & forms: Co-housing,
expanded houses, hamlet, urban & rural village design, building new &
retrofitting existing communities
- Innovative options for services & technologies: household to community
scale
- Facilitating participatory community consultation, problem solving and
participatory design
- Decision-making, conflict resolution & mediation
Participants at past courses have included people looking to start a
community, eco-village developers, community workers, architects, planners,
landscape architects, engineers, environmental planners, permaculture
designers and teachers, community development facilitators and people
working in sustainable aid and development.
Course includes excursions to Jarlanbah, Currumbin Ecovillage and local
intentional communities

VENUE
Djanbung Gardens is a purpose-designed permaculture learnscape and training
centre in subtropical NSW. The passive solar earthbrick centre is set in a
5-acre paradise of working permaculture systems and neighbouring Jarlanbah
eco-hamlet and 2 new ecovillage sites. Just a 10 minute walk from the heart
of Nimbin village, a centre of alternative technology, lifestyle, organics
and intentional community, Djanbung Gardens is the hub of a vibrant
Bioregional Campus network of sustainability in action.
Students have access to the extensive reference library, broadband internet,
& living learning environment.(the name Djanbung was given by senior
Bundjalung elder and means platypus in the local Wijabul dialect)

ROBYN FRANCIS leading international permaculture designer, educator,
presenter and innovator, draws from over 25 years experience in organics,
permaculture practices and community development.
An empowering and inspiring teacher who ³walks the talk ², founding
director of Permaculture International Ltd ³87, editor of the Permaculture
International Journal ¹87-Œ93, in 1994 Francis founded Djanbung Gardens
which attracts students and visitors from around the world.
The designer of Jarlanbah, NSW first community title eco-village, Robyn has
consulted on numerous community and sustainable development projects in
Australia and overseas including India, Malaysia, Bali and New Zealand,
working with indigenous and culturally diverse communities. Her work in
ecovillage and sustainable urban design has influenced state planning and
local government policy development.
Robyn Francis played a key role in the development of the Accredited
Permaculture Training, which has national recognition under the Australian
accreditation authorities, and continues to play a significant role in the
on going development of APT for national delivery and course development.
She founded the Erda Institute to develop the bioregional campus for APT
courses at Djanbung Gardens and continues to pioneer innovative and creative
learning and participatory planning facilitation.
