OK, so nobody out there has anything to say about using phragmites (shredded dry stems) for mulch and for compost (shredded green shoots). I accept that. Does anyone have leads in terms of other sources to consult, or other lists to submit questions to?

Try one of the high-traffic internet forums, such as the soil, compost, and mulch forum on gardenweb. Or look for a regional forum for your area, or one focused on riparian plants. In my experience, the lists on which enough people participate so that obscure questions can get answered are too high-volume for e-mail (and I find that once posts get over about 5 a day, I skip most of them, unless the topics are profoudly fascinating), but the internet-only lists are quite effective for any question that is at all out of the ordinary.
