Hey folks,

OK, so nobody out there has anything to say about using phragmites (shredded dry stems) for mulch and for compost (shredded green shoots). I accept that. Does anyone have leads in terms of other sources to consult, or other lists to submit questions to?
I've been on yahoo's dis list and missed a bunch of posts (including a troll apparently.) I don't know another list for you, sorry. I only have anecdotal knowledge, not studied, but I have used our phragmites for projects and shredding would be important for breaking down. Mats we made with unbroken stems lasted over 5 years hanging and I've thought of using them for an aeration strata. But mulch might break down sooner w soil contact. We waxed our cordage so I'm not sure, but it felt much more degradable. Not sure on metal content or nutrients. Doesn't tang my tongue like some plants do when in questionably metallic soil. Good luck.

Peace,
Kathyann
