(this post is dedicated to julian kayne of the san
andreas fault, california)
here in jerusalem there are many feral/street cats
which people also feed.
these cats are not, imho, a positive influence so i
keep them away from "my" place the best i can without
becoming obsessed.
when i first moved in, many cats visited frequently.
now, a few cats visit very infrequently.
this is what i do:
douse the edges of the area with your own urine to
"mark your territory." if you see cats, hiss loudly
and menacingly at them and throw something at them.
the intention is to scare, not kill, but i won't call
the humane society if you actually nail one with a
small rock. also, if there are any comfortable
protected spots where the cats like to hang
out...eliminate them, make them uncomfortable for
cats, and/or douse them with urine.
eventually, the cats will realize that your zone is
not nearly as pleasant as others, and will mostly stop
coming by. now if that cat is your own pet or "Fifi"
from next door, there are other options, but i don't
have much experience with regular pet cats.
good luck!
akiva
