Weighing in with my own two cents, I would note that it takes a lot of straw
to equal the value of leaves. And it takes a lot of leaves to equal the value
of vegetable matter. So I would not only ask the local municipalities what
they do with their leaf litter, I'd go around to the groceries and farmers'
markets to see what they do with yesterday's veggies.
If you have access to a shredder you can mulch this stuff fine and mix the
dry goods and the wet goods together. It digests faster, becoming more
accessible-- and your good bugs will love it.
