Title: Re: [permaculture] Carbon Sinks / Fire Proof Forests
Kirby says:
Our dryer forests (east of the Sierra Nevadas and west of the Appalachians) need to be reestablished in a way that minimizes their chances of burning and yet yields some degree of sustainable timber products.  These forests probably need to be tended to much the way German foresters tend to the Black Forest.

Local Forest Biologist Chris Maser notes that in the Black Forest there is little allowed to rot on the forest floor, which pauperizes the myco-ecology. He feels it's a reason that acid rain has hit the Black Forest so heavily- no mushroom buffer.
Maser says forests and their fauna need big wood on the ground. The big logs don't burn much when rotten and damp, and they provide refugia during fires and habitat all the time for fungal vectors like voles.

You can say elephants might be too much for Texans (thought they liked it big!) but read *The Ghosts of Evolution* and think about it....
