MUTATE!
I once heard someone suggest that what drives mutation ( which is what drives evolution) are viruses..... In other words, perhaps the role of an Ebola or Aids virus is to propel the species to mutate to adapt...... I guess this could be taken further and linked to the role of chemicals etc. in "helping" us to advance/mutate
