I don't know -- except that the quote came from her originally, as Allen and
Robert said.

The quote from O'Connor's "A Memoir for MaryAnn" reads...

"In the absence of this faith now, we govern by tenderness. It is
tenderness which, long since cut off from the person of Christ, is wrapped
in theory. When tenderness is detached from the source of tenderness, its
logical outcome is terror [terrorism?]. It ends in forced labor camps and
in the fumes of the gas chamber" (p. 227 Mystery and Manners).

Sounds like O'Connor and Percy are saying the same thing.

&gt;&nbsp; Subject: [percy-l] "...to the gas chamber..."<BR>&gt; =
&gt;<BR>&gt;=20
&gt;<BR>&gt; &gt;&nbsp; I wasn't sure if it was Percy who had =
originally<BR>&gt;=20
said this, or Percy<BR>&gt; &gt;quoting Flannery O'Connor or someone =
else.&nbsp;=20
I<BR>&gt; recently came across it in<BR>&gt; &gt;"Signposts in a Strange =
Land"=20
in the epilogue "An<BR>&gt; Interview with Zoltan<BR>&gt; =
&gt;Abadi-Nagy" --=20
last line (p. 396, Picador).<BR>&gt; &gt;<BR>&gt; &gt;&nbsp; Am I =
correct in=20
assuming this is a "Percy<BR>&gt; original" and this is the<BR>&gt;=20
first<BR>&gt; &gt;time the phrase had been said?&nbsp; Or is he=20
referring<BR>&gt; to another use of the<BR>&gt; &gt;phrase?<BR>&gt; =
&gt;<BR>&gt;=20
&gt;&nbsp; By the way, I just finished Tolson's biography of<BR>&gt; =
Percy=20
("Pilgrim in the<BR>&gt; &gt;Ruins") and I thought it was =
fantastic.<BR>&gt;=20
